Police McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and firefighter/paramedics from Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded about 3:00 a.m. Wednesday January 1, 2020 to a report of a serious car crash into a tree in the block of 11100 Charles Road in unincorporated Woodstock.

Police and firefighter/paramedics on arrival discovered a 24 year-old woman dead at the scene and her vehicle split in half from the high-speed impact and force of hitting a tree.

An on-scene crash investigation closed the roadway until about 7:00 a.m., and an ongoing crash investigation remains underway with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled.

Initial investigation determined that a woman from Harvard, Illinois was westbound on Charles Road toward Harvard when her 2007 Dodge Caliber left the roadway and struck a tree. The Speed Limit is not posted on Charles Road, but a curve warning sign alerts motorists to reduce speed to 50 MPH on the 2-lane rural highway. A speed of 55 MPH applies to Charles Road as a rural 2-lane highway unless another Speed Limit is posted.

Speed Limits
Speeding is one of the leading contributors to vehicle crashes, deaths and serious injuries on roadways. Individuals may drive at the maximum allowable speed only under safe conditions. For safety purposes, a minimum speed limit may be posted along certain roadways.

When minimum limits are not posted, a driver should not drive so slow as to create an interference with the normal movement of traffic.

The following speed limits apply, unless otherwise posted:
• Interstates and tollways — 70 mph.
• Highways with four lanes — 65 mph.
• Other highways and rural areas — 55 mph.
• City/town areas — 30 mph.
• Alleys — 15 mph.
• School zones — 20 mph (on school days between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. when children are present and signs are posted).

Local municipalities have the discretion to post speed limits different from those listed.

A driver must take care to slow down when approaching and crossing an intersection, going around a curve, approaching the top of a hill, or traveling on a narrow and winding roadway.

A driver must be aware that there may always be dangers present due to pedestrians, bicyclists, traffic, weather, mechanical problems or road conditions.
