Police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 12:35 a.m. CT Sunday December 22, 2019 to a report of shots fired at a residence in the block of 5700 South May Street. Initially firefighters on Engine 116 and paramedics on arrival found four people shot, then early reports indicated that 11 people had been transported to area hospitals. Eventually it was learned that 13 people were shot inside a residence in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

Male Suspect Arrested Immediately After Mass Shooting on May St Near 57th Street, Chicago
According to Chicago police, about 12:35 a.m. Sunday 9-1-1 callers said that shots were fired in the block of 5700 South May Street at a residence. The incident possibly occurred during a house party or memorial at a 2-story greystone apartment building. Chicago Fire Department activated an EMS Plan 1 at 12:49 a.m. which typically brings an additional five ambulances and a paramedic Field Chief to the scene. A total of seven ambulances eventually responded to the scene, just southeast of the intersection of Racine Avenue and Garfield Boulevard. Some victims arrived at hospitals via personal transportation.

Vehicles were blocking the neighborhood on May Street, and paramedics were told to bring their ambulances from the east on 57th Street.
The ages and conditions of the victims were not immediately available, according to the Chicago Police Department. Patients were transported Level 1 Trauma Centers at Stroger and University of Chicago. About seven patients were transported from the scene by about 1:17 a.m.
