Fire in Kitchen Wall Discovered 3 Days After a Cigarette Ignites Planting Material in Container on Patio Deck on Shambliss Ln, Buffalo Grove

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Buffalo Grove were dispatched about 2:24 a.m. Wednesday December 11, 2019 to a report of a fire on a rear patio deck in the block of 900 Shambliss Lane. Battalion Chief 4 on arrival reported a small fire on the rear deck, and that firefighters were pulling a line to extinguish the fire. The fire on the rear deck was extinguished by 2:38 a.m.

Firefighters learned that before they arrived, the resident saw smoke coming from a container on the deck outside the kitchen after being alerted by the smell of smoke and an activated smoke alarm about 2:20 a.m. After opening a window, the resident sprayed the container with a nozzle from the kitchen sink, but the fire was not extinguished.

Firefighters examined the exterior wall of the home with a thermal imaging camera and determined there was heat in the wall indicating fire or smoldering behind the exterior wall. The incident was upgraded to a working fire and firefighters began to pull some of the wall away to extinguish a small fire or smoldering in the wall. The fire in the wall was declared extinguished about 3:21 a.m.

No injuries were reported, the rear wall of the home had minor heat, smoke and water damage.

An initial investigation determined that a cigarette disposed on flammable planting material in a deck container three days prior had ignited a small fire.

Firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights, Barrington-Countryside, Deerfield-Bannockburn, Lincolnshire, Long Grove, Prospect Heights, and Rolling Meadows responded either to the scene or to standby in Buffalo Grove fire stations during fire suppression operations at the house.

A board-up company secured a hole that was created by firefighters in the exterior wall to get at the fire and extinguish the fire.
