Naperville police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:49 p.m. Friday October 4, 2019 to a report of a serious crash at Ogden Avenue and Columbia Street — just northeast of downtown Naperville.
Upon arrival police and firefighter/paramedics discovered a single-vehicle crash involving a 2014 BMW with severe damage and a vehicle fire that was also burning the traffic signal. The crashed vehicle was driven by a 47-year-old male from Lisle, Illinois.
The 47-year-old male was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Due to the severity of the crash and injuries, members of the Naperville Police Department Traffic Unit trained in accident investigation and reconstruction were assigned to the scene to investigate the crash. During the course of the rescue and the initial investigation, the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Columbia was closed and rerouted until approximately 5:00 a.m.
The initial investigation indicates that the BMW was traveling eastbound on Ogden Avenue towards Columbia Street when the driver lost control, striking the traffic signal on the southeast corner of the intersection. The BMW was split in half and caught fire upon impact with the traffic signal pole. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and police initially did not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. Several witnesses spoke with Naperville police.
The Speed Limit along Ogden Avenue (US 34) is 35 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View. Eastbound Ogden Avenue involves a curve from east to northeast just before the intersection, at the intersection, and just after the intersection. Striking the traffic traffic signal at the southeast corner would be consistent with the driver and vehicle failing to make the turn, and the fire and vehicle split would be consistent with a high-speed crash.
By Monday October 7, 2019, the Lisle man was released from the hospital. Initially, no citations or charges were filed as the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crash is urged to contact the Naperville Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 630-420-8833.
