Driver Charged with Reckless Homicide, Reckless Driving, Using Electronic Device in Crash that Killed Stephanie Rojas in Beach Park in August, 2018

Following a thorough investigation, Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators determined that Gabriel Flores, age 21, of the block of 3500 Howard Avenue, Park City, was distracted by an electronic device when he crossed the double-yellow center median and crashed head-on with another vehicle about 6:04 p.m. on August 10, 2018 near Green Bay Road and Nemesis Avenue. Gabriel Flores was driving a 2005 Dodge Durango northbound on Green Bay Road and struck a 2014 Kia Forte head-on. The driver of the Kia Forte was critically injured by the crash and died on August 12, 2018. The driver was identified as Stephanie A. Rojas, age 26, of the block of 2900 31st Street, Zion. The crash also injured an 8 year-old child and a 6 year-old child, who was critically injured.

Following a thorough investigation, Lake County Sheriff’s Crash Investigators reviewed the evidence and facts surrounding the crash with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. On Wednesday October 2, 2109, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office presented the facts of the case to a Lake County Grand Jury, and the Grand Jury indicted Gabriel Flores with 13 Counts related to the fatal crash.

Eight Counts of Aggravated Reckless Driving Causing Great Bodily Harm (Class 4 Felonies)

One Count of Aggravated Use of an Electronic Device While Driving (Class 4 Felony)

Following the indictment, a Lake County Judge issued a warrant for the arrest of Gabriel Flores and set bond at $500,000.00.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office also reminded the public that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
