Niles Police Department reported Thursday that on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 detectives from the Niles Police Department charged Walmart armed robbery suspect Jonathan Reyes with the August 11, 2019 armed robbery, which he is accused of committing at the store’s 5630 West Touhy Avenue location.

Previous to a social media threat incident in Norridge which was connected to Jonathan Reyes — and resulted in his arrest by Norridge Police Department — Niles police detectives had developed information about the suspect’s identity and Jonathan Reyes was positively identified by witnesses. The Cook County States Attorney’s Office was contacted by Niles Police Department, and a warrant for Armed Robbery was issued.

On Tuesday September 17, 2019, Niles police detectives attempted to make contact with Jonathan Reyes at his residence, but he was not home. Detectives spoke to a family member, who then called Jonathan Reyes on his cellphone. The suspect answered his cellphone, but he refused to tell the detectives his location, and the phone call ended. Reyes would be contacted and arrested by Norridge Police Department on the same day.

Suspect Jonathan Reyes, age 18, was taken into custody by Norridge Police Department police officers after online threats were made by the suspect directed at Ridgewood High School, 7500 West Montrose Avenue in Norridge. Police officers from Norridge became aware of at least two threatening posts about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday September 17, 2019.

Norridge police investigators learned Reyes, who lives in the Albany Park neighborhood in Chicago, was believed to be on his way to a home in the block of 4000 Oleander Avenue in Norridge. Police officers from Norridge Police Department arrived at the address, and confirmed he was inside the home by 2:00 p.m.

Police officers entered the house and found a gun during a partial search of the house. The police officers decided to back out as a precaution because they didn’t know where Reyes was located inside the house. A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were assigned to the address of the home to assist police on the scene, and Reyes was taken into custody by 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Two other 18-year-old males were also inside the home. The two were identified as Luke Jones and Aries Sanders. Both males were also taken into custody, and each suspect was charged with a felony count of Obstructing Justice by Furnishing False information.

Luke Jones and Aries Sanders were both released on personal recognizance bonds after bail hearings Thursday at the Rolling Meadows Cook County circuit courthouse.

Jonathan Reyes is accused of creating a social media post that showed him “making a verbal threat to shoot at the school ” and posting another social media post that showed a picture of himself holding a handgun, according to a statement from Norridge Police Department. In addition to threat-related charges filed by Norridge Police Department, the suspect was charged by Niles Police Department with one count of Armed Robbery with a Firearm.

At court on Thursday September 19, 2019, Reyes’ bail was set at $5,000 and he remains in custody while scheduled for a September 23, 2019 bail hearing for the armed robbery charge.
