Police and firefighter/paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 2:24 PM Friday, September 20, 2019 to a report of a vehicle inside Woodfield Mall, driving and crashing through the mall. There was also a report of an active shooter, but this turned out not to be true. After a thorough initial investigation Schaumburg police announced that there was no evidence of an active shooter at Woodfield Mall.
A male driver of a black SUV drove into an entrance to Sears on the north side of Woodfield Mall near the parking garage. The driver then drove into the mall in the area where the kiosks are in the middle of the hallway by Rainforest Cafe and drove towards the center of the mall, directly hitting some kiosks.
The male driver is in custody, according to Schaumburg Police Department. A witness that was managing a Sprint mobile kiosk, was nearly hit just before his kiosk was smashed by the SUV. He said the driver had his driver’s window rolled down and was yelling something as he was driving down the mall.
There was chaos in the mall and some people were injured while trying to escape the SUV. However, Schaumburg police initially report there are no major injuries.
Police officers from several local communities, Cook County Sheriff’s deputies, Illinois State Police troopers, Illinois Conservation officers, and the FBI were on the scene assisting Schaumburg police officers.
Woodfield mall was evacuated after the incident, and Schaumburg Police advised the public to stay away from the mall until there is an update.
