Late summer and early fall is the time of the year when young coyotes are on their own for the first time in their lives. Young coyotes tend to make more mistakes, such as sitting out in the open. But this isn’t a problem for the coyote here, since they’re rarely hunted in Arlington Heights by human hunters, and there are not any natural predators of coyotes here, except for the very, very rare possibility of a cougar in Chicagoland. Wolves are also predators of coyotes, but they are also known to breed with coyotes. The hybrid is known as a coywolf. A 90-pound female wolf was found dead as roadkill just north of Morris, Illinois in Grundy county southwest of Chicago on February 13, 2015.

This coyote crossed Belmont Avenue after walking through the property at Thomas Middle School and sat down and lied down on the sidewalk on the north side of Green Slopes Park for a little rest and some grooming.

In December 2017 two coyotes were discovered walking in daylight near Hickory Meadows Park, which is just east of Green Slopes Park at Douglas Avenue and Marion Street.

Non-meat foods that coyotes eat
Blackberries, blueberries, peaches, pears, apples, peanuts, watermelons, cantaloupes, and carrots.

It’s important that people don’t leave food out for coyotes because the coyotes can lose their natural fear of humans, which can increase the likelihood of coyote attacks on small dogs. In September 2017 food was possibly left out intentionally for coyotes to eat near Centennial Park, just northwest of Hintz Road and Windsor Drive. Neighbors reported seeing cooked food, such as pork chops and an entire slab of ribs, left out. The Village of Arlington Heights recommended that people dispose of food that they see is left outside, or call 9-1-1 to have authorities properly dispose the food, and possibly investigate the incident.
