After a thorough investigation, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives determined that all of the parties involved knew each other where a shot was fired at a townhouse in the block of 17700 West Horseshoe Lane in unincorporated Gurnee on Thursday, September 5, 2019. Two 17-year-old males visited the residence two weeks prior to the shooting incident, and one of the teens sold a pair of shoes to a 17-year-old male that resides at the house on Horseshoe Lane.

The day the shooting occurred, the same two teens arrived at the townhouse to collect payment from the resident, claiming he had not paid for the shoes. The two teens arrived at the residence on Thursday, September 5, 2019, and knocked on the door. The 17-year-old who resides at the townhouse came to the front door. During the conversation the resident of the townhouse flashed a semi-automatic pistol in his waistband — displaying it to the two other teens. After displaying the firearm, the 17-year-old resident reached for it, and a physical fight between the three ensued. The 17-year-old resident fired one shot at the two males. One of the males was struck in the inner-thigh area of both legs. Both visiting teens fled from the scene in fear of being shot again. Police had responded to the scene of the shots fired disturbance, but were not informed that anyone had been shot.

The juvenile who suffered the gunshot wound attempted to tend to his injury on his own, without telling anyone else he had been shot. When Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives spoke with him and saw his injury, detectives ensured that the juvenile received medical treatment.

The firearm used in the shooting was recovered late in the evening on September 5, 2019.

On Monday, September 9, 2019, the 17-year-old Horseshoe Lane resident was petitioned to the juvenile justice system on the charges of:

Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony)
Aggravated Assault (Class 4 Felony)

The juvenile is being held at the Hulse Juvenile Detention Facility in Vernon Township pending a juvenile detention hearing.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office in their news release reminded the public that all suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
