An Illinois State Police trooper was shot in the wrist or forearm while working on an arrest warrant operation on Hickory Drive just east of Harmony Drive in Wheeling about 6:37 p.m. Thursday August 15, 2019. The work to complete the arrest warrant may have begun about 6:20 p.m. A large number of Illinois State Police troopers responded to the scene along with Wheeling Police Department and Wheeling firefighter/paramedics when the trooper was shot from a gun fired inside a townhouse on Hickory Drive.
Hickory Drive runs east of Harmony Drive just south of Manchester Drive in Wheeling. Many neighbors of the Harmony Village neighborhood watched from outside the police tape perimeter as police worked to arrest at least one suspect, and take precautions in case another suspect was inside the townhouse where they had attempted to serve the warrant.
Several neighbors said they saw at least one suspect arrested by police. Firefighter/paramedics transported the trooper from north of the scene near Manchester Drive and Virginia Place.
Police used a battering ram to knock down a garage door down, according to witnesses. K-9 units were also used to check for a second suspect. Illinois State Police also used a loudspeaker to order evacuation of the townhouse in case a second suspect was still inside the townhouse.
Apparently only one suspect was in the townhouse, and that suspect is in custody. DEVELOPING …
