A short time later, Gurnee Police Officers were in the area of Route 132 and Hunt Club Road, Gurnee, investigating a traffic crash. The driver of a 2015 black Lexus SUV drove toward the Gurnee police officers at the crash scene, and the occupants of the Lexus stopped and told the Gurnee police officers that their passenger needed medical assistance as they removed the injured male from the vehicle. Gurnee police officers administered first aid to the male, and he was subsequently transported by Gurnee firefighter/paramedics to Level I Trauma Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he later died. One of the occupants in the Lexus, who exited the vehicle with the injured male, was taken into custody at the crash scene, but four of the occupants in the Lexus fled from the scene at a high rate of speed.

Gurnee Police Officers initially pursued the stolen vehicle and were joined by Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Illinois State Police by 1:45 a.m. Speeds in the pursuit reached over 100 miles an hour southbound on I-94.

The driver of the black Lexus eventually stopped, and the occupants bailed out of the car in the area of North Halsted Street and West Randolph Street, Chicago. The four remaining male/black occupants split in all directions, but were taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit by Illinois State Police and Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies. One of the four suspects had jumped into a garbage can to hide from police in the West Town neighborhood. One of the four suspects was a woman.

The injured male, who was brought to the police officers at the crash scene at Route 132 and Hunt Club Road in Gurnee, had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Advanced Life Support was administered to the man who was shot, but he was gravely wounded and pronounced dead at Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and is scheduling an autopsy of the gunshot victim.

The incident is still in the preliminary stages of the investigation and additional details will be released as they become available, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
