ONE DEAD SHOOTING VICTIM IS SHOOTER’S SISTER

In a press conference mid-morning, Dayton authorities released the patient status and some details about the shooting scene. In the early-afternoon press conference, Dayton authorities released the identities of the dead shooter and the victims he killed, while Ohio Governor Mike DeWine praised first responders.

Nine victims were killed, at least 27 people were injured, and the shooter was killed by police less than one minute after deadly assault began. Witnesses reported that the shooting began near the entrance of Ned Peppers Bar on 5th Street in the downtown Oregon Historic District of Dayton. Authorities from Dayton, including Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley have initially refused to connect the shooting with a proximity to Ned Peppers Bar. Mayor Whaley emphasized in an answer to a media question, “We’re telling you that the shooting took place on East 5th Street and on the sidewalks of East 5th Street.”

Dayton, Ohio Mayor Nan Whaley leads a mid-morning press conference updating details of a mass shooting that occurred in the Oregon District of downtown Dayton.

Miami Valley Hospital received 16 patients. Twelve patients were treated and released. Four patients were admitted with one patient listed in critical condition.

Dr. Semon reported that some patients will be undergoing surgery later today at Miami Valley Hospital.

Elizabeth Long from Kettering Health Network reported the health network received patients at three of their hospitals — Grandview Medical Center, Kettering Medical Center, and Soin Medical Center.

Grandview Medical Center in Dayton received nine patients. Seven arrived by ambulance and two walked in to the hospital. A total of nine people were treated. Three patients were taken into surgery immediately.

During the press conference question and answer period, a member of the media — directing a question to Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper — was seeking to confirm the number of police officers that were at the scene prior to the shooting. The reporter mentioned that he was in the Oregon District at Ned Peppers Bar on Friday prior to the shooting. Mayor Nan Whaley joked, saying, “What were you doing there?” Dayton Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeff Lykins laughed at the mayor’s joke, but Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper maintained his composure. The reporter then described that he saw about eight police officers in the area on Friday, August 2, 2019. The reporter inquired whether there were the same number of officers on Saturday night/early Sunday morning as there were on Friday. Carper replied that there were several police officers assigned to the Oregon District late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The quick response of Dayton police, who were already nearby, is being recognized as crucial in neutralizing the shooter within a minute, and preventing a much higher casualty count.

At the mid-morning press conference Carper said that all the fatalities occurred outside in the street. He would not initially confirm whether all of the wounded victims were injured outside.
