Townhouse Explosion Possibly Caused by Worker’s Saw Hitting Gas Line on ShagBark Ln in Streamwood.

Streamwood police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:00 p.m. Monday July 29, 2019 to a report of an explosion and blown out windows at a townhouse building in the block of 0-99 Shagbark Lane, Streamwood. Firefighter/paramedics, responding immediately, were able to quickly knock down the fire, treat an injured worker, and search the interior of the townhouse for any possible victims. Firefighter/paramedics discovered that the worker was the only person injured, and that nobody was home in the townhouse at the time of the explosion.

The injured worker is a heating and air conditioning contractor, who was working outside near the rear wall of the building. When the explosion occurred, he was injured by flying glass. He suffered lacerations and was transported to St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates. He was released a short time later.

Fire investigators determined that a natural gas pipe in the basement had been damaged when it was possibly nicked by a saw operated by a contractor at the townhouse. A small opening in the gas pipe filled the basement with gas, and the gas ignited and caused an explosion and fire in the townhouse on Shagbark Lane just east of Bartlett Road on Monday July 29, 2019.

One unit of the three-unit, 2-story townhouse sustained significant damage. The damage was estimated late Monday at $75,000, according to Streamwood Fire Department.

Firefighters from Bartlett, East Dundee, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg also responded to the scene when the call was elevated to a confirmed working fire. Nicor Gas also responded immediately to the scene.

A man suffered minor injuries in an explosion inside a northwest suburban townhouse Monday evening, according to officials, and WGN’s Patrick Elwood interviewed Streamwood resident Kevin Hill, who rescued the injured worker.
