Down Detector tracks outages, and was itself down during the outage. When Cloudflare operation returned, statistics on Down Detector showed a spike in reported problems about 9:00 a.m. CDT. A downdetector report stated, “Cloudflare is having issues since 9:56 AM EDT.”
Last week on June 24, 2019 a major outage affected Cloudflare, Facebook and Amazon and more when an Internet Service Provider in Pennsylvania was using a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) optimizer, according to Cloudflare.
The use of BGP caused a lot of traffic to be delivered through specific routes that were inefficient for handling the volume of traffic experienced. Cloudflare stated that Verizon allowed these routing information instructions to be revealed worldwide and failed to promote a process that would allow filtering out of the improperly applied instructions by failing to used a process known as Internet Routing Registry (IRR) filtering.
Regarding today’s outage, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince explained that there was a massive spike in global CPU usage, but did not elaborate further. By 9:39 a.m. Tuesday, Matthew Prince was asked on Twitter, why the CEO was tweeting about this while there was nothing about the outage on the official Cloudflare Twitter account. Matthew Prince replied “I’ll make sure they are as well.” However, as of 10:20 a.m. CDT on Tuesday there was no mention of the outage on the Cloudflare Twitter account.
