Schaumburg police responded about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2019 to the Extended Stay Hotel at 1200 American Lane to investigate a noise complaint. Police officers approached the room that was identified as the source of the complaint and discovered that a firearm had been discharged. A guest from that room exited the hotel room and indicated to police that other subjects were still in the room, and had discharged a firearm. Police responded to the comment as a possible barricaded subject or subjects inside the hotel room.

Police evacuated guests from the hotel, and requested the assistance of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services Team (EST) to investigate the possibility of the armed barricaded subjects, as a precaution. The room was checked, but no other subjects were found inside the room.

The subject from that room was identified as Zachary Woelfel — a male/white, age 29, of the block of 300 Thorncliff Drive, Glendale Heights, IL. Officers from the Special Operations Division located a handgun, spent shell casings, and 91 grams of cocaine. Woelfel was transported to the Schaumburg Police Department for further investigation.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office reviewed the case and authorized the following charges:

Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 2 Felony)

Possession of a Defaced Firearm (Class 3 Felony)

Reckless Discharge of a Firearm (Class 4 Felony)

Delivery of Cocaine (Class X Felony)

Possession of Cocaine (Class 1 Felony)

Woelfel will be transported to the 3rd District Cook County Courthouse in Rolling Meadows for a bond hearing.

“This case is an excellent example of the Schaumburg Police Department and other law enforcement agencies working cooperatively to remove a dangerous felon from our community”, said Schaumburg Police Chief Bill Wolf.

Schaumburg Police stated: “Members of the public are reminded that this arrest and complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”
