Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:30 p.m. Monday May 27, 2019 to a report of people in the water after a paddle boat capsized in the block of 4000 North Terramere Drive at Lake Terramere. According to police, numerous local residents called 9-1-1 to report a paddle boat had capsized and several people were in the lake. Additional information was provided by local residents as the fire department was dispatch with two ambulances, two fire engine crews, a rescue squad, and a dive rescue unit with a boat. The response also included a response of area fire department divers, but the extra divers were returned when it was learned that all of the boat occupants were out of the water. Unfortunately, a man that was in the boat went under water and was in need of rescue by a local resident or several local residents and then by firefighter/paramedics. None of the residents on the east side of Lake Terramere would provide any information about how the man was brought to shore, or any other details about the incident. When police and firefighter/paramedics arrived CPR was being performed on an adult/male by a civilian or civilians in the neighborhood.
Upon arrival of police and firefighter/paramedics, Arlington Heights Fire Department paramedics took over patient care. A Lucas automated CPR device was provided as treatment along with airway intubation, and other Advanced life support measures. Firefighter/paramedics worked at the scene with Advanced Life Support resuscitation for approximately 30 minutes before the adult male was transported to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by an Emergency Department physician after additional treatment was provided in the Emergency Department. Initially the identification of the man was not released, but police said the man was a 44-year-old resident of Huntley, Illinois.
A second adult and two young children, who were on the boat, were evaluated at the scene and not transported to the hospital. A Buffalo Grove Fire Department’s rescue ambulance crew was dispatched as the third ambulance to the scene to evaluate the other adult and the two young children.
A preliminary investigation by Arlington Heights Police Department determined there is no sign of criminal activity and no foul play is suspected. Arlington Heights Police Department determined the incident appears to be a tragic accident. There was no information available regarding whether any of the people on the paddle boat were wearing life vests or whether the paddle boat had a capacity of two or more people. Periods of rain, lightning and thunder occurred throughout Memorial Day after about 1:00 p.m., but lightning was not reported to be involved in this incident.
Initially it was not confirmed whether a private resident owned the paddle boat, or whether the boat was owned by the Terramere Homeowner’s Association. The only capsized boat that was drifting on the lake appeared to a capsized canoe.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will review this case on Tuesday May 28, 2019 to officially determine a cause of death.
