Zion resident Vincent C. Bevly, age 57, was charged Friday May 17, 2019 with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Army Veteran Cory Rhinehart, who was reported missing by his family on Monday March 18, 2019, according to Zion Police Department. Rhinehart was last seen on Friday March 15, 2019, and a cell phone call to 9-1-1 from Rhinehart’s cell phone was also received on March 15, 2019, according to Zion police in an earlier statement. Initially, no additional updated details were released, and a photo image of the suspect was not initially available. Initially, Zion police did not publicly release details regarding whether Cory Rhinehart’s body was discovered.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force took Bevly into custody on a $5 million warrant related to two counts of first-degree murder, according to Zion Police Department. Vincent C. Bevly is scheduled to appear before a judge Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

During a two-month search for Cory Rhinehart, Zion police and firefighter/paramedics had responded about 11:30 a.m. Monday April 22, 2019 to a report that a body was found in a retention pond in the block of 1500 Lorelei Drive, just north of Route 173, and just west of the Walmart Supercenter in Zion, but the body was identified as another resident of Zion.

Maintenance workers for the Woodstone Village Apartments observed the body in the retention pond and called 9-1-1. The Zion Fire/Rescue Department, under the direction of the Lake County Coroner’s Office, retrieved the body. The body was confirmed to be an adult male, and CBS Chicago reported Monday evening that police said that foul play was not a factor in the death. Then on April 30, 2019, the Zion Police Department reported that the body discovered was identified as Aaron Ramos, age 25, of Zion.

The Walmart is located about 1.5 mile northwest of the intersection of 21st Street and Gabriel Avenue — the location of an apartment building where Cory Rhinehart was last seen on Friday March 15, 2019 — before apparently leaving for his job at a nursing home. Cory Rhinehart, age 28, shared an apartment unit with his sister.

Since Cory Rhinehart’s suspicious 9-1-1 call on Friday, March 15, 2019, Zion police and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force have been searching for Cory Rhinehart and investigating the circumstances regarding his disappearance. He had been last seen wearing black hospital scrubs, black Converse Chuck Taylor tennis shoes and a black pea coat

According to family information, a 9-1-1 call at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2019 was received from Cory Rinehart’s cell phone from an apartment or near an apartment in the block of 2100 block of Gabriel Avenue, which is near the intersection with 21st Street in Zion and is not far from where Cory Rhinehart lived. The 9-1-1 call was disconnected before there was any voice communication from Rhinehart’s phone and the dispatch center. Police were dispatched to the area of the apartment, where blood was discovered, according to Rinehart’s stepfather, Melvin Holmes, who is married to Rhinehart’s mother, Andrea Holmes. Cory Rhinehart was not at the location. Initially there was no confirmation whether Rhinehart’s cell phone was discovered.

Police taped off the 3-story apartment where the blood was found, and took a plaster cast of a tire track impression found in grass near the apartment.

Zion police did not confirmed the details of the 9-1-1 call, except that it was a hangup call, and initially police released little information about the case.

A family-and-friends search for Cory Rhinehart on Thursday March 21, 2019 was canceled after a police request to delay the search because of the possibility that potential evidence could be contaminated, or that the investigation could be hindered by the group’s activity. Cory’s mother spent the day searching for Cory on Thursday, and a vigil was held along Lake Michigan Thursday evening March 21, 2019 instead.
