TANKER TRUCK WITH HIGHLY FLAMMABLE ETHANOL LEAK AND DRIVER TRAPPED ON NB ELMHURST ROAD NEAR I-90

Des Plaines police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:46 AM Wednesday May 8, 2019 to a report of a rollover crash with injuries on northbound Elmhurst Road near I-90 at the diamond interchange where Elmhurst Road goes over I-90.

Des Plaines Engine 63’s crew on arrival reported a rollover tanker truck leaking fluid. The crew reported Placard 1987 is displayed on the truck, which would be ethanol alcohol if the placard is accurate.

The driver was pinned in the truck and crews were working in rapid extrication mode. If actually Placard 1987, contents are ethanol alcohol. Denatured ethanol is described as ethanol with additives to make it poisonous, bad-tasting, foul-smelling, or nauseating to discourage recreational consumption.

A response from Chicago ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) was also immediately requested to respond from O’Hare International Airport.

The crash was upgraded to a working fire response at 7:59 a.m. because of the highly flammable nature of the hazardous material.

All firefighters near the scene are with full PPE and SCBA.

The truck driver was extricated at 8:25 a.m. and firefighters were backing up from scene. Aerial video from the ABC 7 Chicago news helicopter showed firefighters working up close to cap the leaks. There were three strong leaks flowing from the top of the tank (underneath the overturned tank).

Chicago Fire Department ARFF Crash Tender 654 crew applied a foam blanket on the pavement and part of the grass embankment. The trucking company dispatched a second semi-tanker to the scene to take the offload product from the crashed tanker.
