Three people were hospitalized and a Level I Hazmat was called at Morgan Park High School after a substance was sprayed or released into the air, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson.

A Level I Hazmat (12:28 p.m.) and an EMS Plan 1 (12:38 p.m.) for multiple ambulances was activated again at Morgan Park High School, 1744 W Pryor Avenue for a pepper spray incident with multiple patients on Thursday May 2, 2019. Students were sheltered in place in classrooms, while three student patients were initially evaluated by paramedics.

Firefighters used fans on the second and third floor to ventilate the school. Firefighters found nothing using a QRAE four-gas monitor which usually provides continuous exposure monitoring of oxygen (O2), combustibles, and toxic gases, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). It’s unknown whether the fire department’s portable meter senses pepper spray or whether it only detects more harmful gases.

Chicago Fire Department EMS managed 12 medical refusals and three medical transported by EMS from Morgan Park High School by about 1:11 p.m., Thursday May 2, 2019, according to Chicago Fire Department Battalion 21.

In the most recent attack before today at Morgan Park High School, three students and two teachers were injured in an apparent pepper spray attack at Morgan Park High School — the latest of four prior pepper spray attacks at the school in a little over a week.

Chicago police officers responded at 12:24 p.m. Wednesday April 29, 2019 to an aerosol spray attack on the 2nd and 3rd floors at the 1700 block of West Pryor, Chicago police said. A police spokesperson did not initially confirm wether the spray was pepper spray.
