The record snowfall for April 14 was broken as the official NWS station at Chicago O’Hare reported 5.4 inches of snow, which is also the month to date accumulation. So far April 2019 ranks as gaining the 9th highest accumulation of snow for the period 1885 to 2019 for Chicago. The highest for the month was 13.6 inches in 1938, which included a 9-inch snowfall on April 6, 1938.
The 5.4-inch snowfall yesterday marks a tie for the most snow in a single day in the period from April 14-30. The snowfall tied a record with a snowfall that occurred on April 16, 1961. The next highest late April snow occurred when 3.1 inches of snow fell on April 23, 1967.
The greatest snowfall on record in May is 1.6 inches, which occurred May 1, 1940.
