Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, along with Rev. Jesse Jackson and other supporters, addressed the media at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

On Saturday April 6, 2019 at a Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and African-American leaders, including Jesse Jackson, condemned Chicago’s police union and defended how the prosecutor’s office managed the case regarding actor Jussie Smollett’s alleged hate crime hoax.

Foxx vowed to continue working as Cook County State’s Attorney, despite calls for her resignation from the Chicago Police Department Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and all police chiefs in suburban Cook County, who say problems with Foxx go way back before the Smollett case.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s abruptly dropped a 16-count indictment that accused television actor Jussie Smollett of planning and carrying out a fake racist and homophobic attack on himself to advance his career.

U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, Jesse Jackson, Southside Black Lives Matter activist Ja’Mal Green, and a group of other Foxx supporters blamed the city’s Fraternal Order of Police for racial problems in the city. Bobby Rush claimed, “The FOP is the sworn enemy of black people, the sworn enemy of black people.”

“The FOP has always taken the position that black people can be shot down in the street by members of the Chicago Police Department, and suffer no consequences,” Rush said. As Rush was speaking, an aide approached Kim Foxx and she stepped out of view. “Let’s be clear: Kim Foxx, her battle, is with the FOP and all of their cohorts.”

Foxx appeared to blame the FOP for injecting racism into the controversy, saying “The injection of white nationalists in this conversation for me, I will tell you personally, I was afraid. I would certainly hope that the FOP and whatever their disagreements with me may be, whatever concerns that they may have about my ability or leadership, would at least expect the people of their union to not inject racism or white nationalists into the conversation.”

Earlier this week the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression protested the FOP. Also, online comments coinciding with the Facebook live streams by Chicago media covering the FOP press conference Thursday April 4, 2019 that called for Foxx’s resignation, accused police chiefs of white supremacy and spoke negatively of Chicago police officers. The first question by a reporter following the FOP statement asked why there were no black police chiefs standing near the podium. Several comments echoed that statement.

After the statements by U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush Saturday afternoon, the Chicago police union described Rush’s comments as “ignorant, offensive, malicious, and false.”

The union continues to demand that Kim Foxx resign from office.
