An Illinois State Police Trooper witnessed a secondary crash on northbound I-294 at Golf Road that killed a Bellwood woman. The Illinois State Trooper was not injured, but a woman who was a passenger in a Chevrolet Camaro and was standing outside the vehicle, was thrown to the pavement on the tollway and suffered traumatic cardiac arrest.
The woman died Saturday March 30, 2019 after she was struck by a vehicle and after an Illinois State Trooper attempted to save her life with CPR on the tollway in Des Plaines.
Kristine Humphrey, age 27, was the passenger in a Chevrolet Camaro involved in the first crash that involved one other vehicle — a Toyota Corolla. The crash disabled both vehicles just after 5:45 a.m. Saturday March 30, 2019. Both of the crashed cars were in the center lane of northbound Interstate 294, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.
Kristine Humphrey and the driver exited the car and were standing in the roadway when the driver of a Honda Accord hit them, and also struck the Chevrolet Camaro, police said. The Chevrolet Camaro then hit the passenger side of a Chrysler 300, which was the fourth vehicle involved in the crash.
Firefighter/paramedics from Des Plaines, Glenview, Niles, and Northbrook were assigned to the crash scene — transporting a total of four crash victims.
Humphrey was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:03 p.m. Saturday, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office said on Sunday March 31, 2019 that she died from multiple injuries in a motor vehicle collision. Her death was ruled an accident.
The drivers of the Chevrolet, the Honda and a Toyota Corolla, which was involved in the initial crash, also were transported to local hospitals with injuries, police said.
Illinois State Police are investigating.
