Michael Avenatti Arrested on Federal Charges of Extortion, Bank Fraud and Wire Fraud

Michael Avenatti accused of trying to shake down Nike For $22 Million, including conspiracy to transmit interstate communications with intent to extort, conspiracy to commit extortion and more.

On March 25, 2019, Michael Avenatti was arrested in Manhattan, New York City, and federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York announced that Avenatti was accused of attempting to extort up to $22.5 million from U.S. athletic apparel and shoe company Nike by threatening to make damaging charges against the company, and that charged were being filed.

Avenatti claimed Nike improperly made payments to families of high school basketball players. His arrested occurred about 15 minutes after he had announced that he would be holding a press conference the next day, at which he claimed he would reveal information about a high school and college basketball scandal involving Nike. The afternoon of March 25 he and an unnamed co-conspirator were scheduled to meet with lawyers from Nike, at which prosecutors allege he would have offered to cancel the press conference in exchange for payment of $22.5 million. Avenatti’s suspected co-conspirator was identified as Mark Geragos. Avenatti was released on a $300,000 bond that evening.

Also on March 25, 2019 the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, Nicola T. Hanna, announced in Los Angeles the filing of a 197-page complaint accusing Avenatti of wire fraud and bank fraud, connected to accusation that he embezzled money from a client and had defrauded a Mississippi bank by submitting false tax returns to obtain more than $4 million in loans. Prosecutors said Avenatti had actually not filed personal tax returns for the years in question.

Mark John Geragos is an American-Armenian criminal defense lawyer, who has worked to defend high-profile clients, including Michael Jackson, Winona Ryder, Gary Condit, Susan McDougal, convicted wife-murderer Scott Peterson, Scott Barney, and accused hate crime hoaxer Jussie Smollett.

Michael Avenatti is probably best known for his representation of adult-film actress Stormy Daniels in her failed lawsuit against President Donald Trump that attempted to void a non-disclosure agreement she had signed.

Michael Avenatti made a brief statement to reporters Monday night after leaving a New York City courthouse, following charges of attempted extortion of millions of dollars from Nike. The attorney, famous for representing Stormy Daniels against Presdient Trump, defended his innocence in the case.

The United States attorney for the Southern District of New York charges attorney Michael Avenatti with attempting to extract more than $20 million in payments from Nike.
