Sarasota Police police officers responded just before 1:00 a.m. Tuesday February 18, 2019 to a report of a person vandalizing the “Unconditional Surrender” statue at North Gulfstream Avenue and Bayfront Drive. Officers found “#MeToo” painted in red on the left leg of the woman.

Police believe the vandalism occurred sometime Monday afternoon or evening. There was no surveillance video of the incident.

Damage is estimated to be more than $1,000. The City of Sarasota Public Works department removed the message.

George Mendonsa is the sailor who kissed Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant wearing a nurse’s uniform, on Aug. 14, 1945. Mendonsa died Sunday at age 95. Some view the kiss as a celebration, but by today’s standards, some consider the act as some type of sexual or disorderly conduct.
