Reindeer, giraffes, and bison like to nibble on evergreen trees, and polar bears have some of their food served in the evergreen trees.
More than 500 holiday trees were decorated this past holiday season for the Tree Trim at Brookfield Zoo. Although in January, the majority of the trees get chipped and used for landscaping around the park; there are a few dozen holiday trees that are repurposed and given to the animals for enrichment.
REINDEER SPA
On January 22, 2019 the reindeer and bison rubbed their antlers and horns, respectively, against the fir-scented trees.

Ron, the zoo’s large male bison could be seen flipping the trees into the air.
TREE A LA CARTE
The polar bears, Hudson and Nan, received trees decorated with various food items, including fish, meat, and vegetables.
CEILING SALAD
Even the giraffes—Jasari, Potoka, and Arnieta—enjoyed the seasonal treat. Animal care staff hung a tree upside down about 15 feet high in the giraffes’ indoor habitat.
BUCKETS OF SNOW
In addition, animal care staff bought some of the snow in for Ben and Charlotte, the zoo’s North American river otters. The two seemed enjoy thoroughly the several large buckets of snow that they received.
Not Wednesday and Thursday this week, but Winter is often a great time to venture out to Brookfield Zoo and see the cold-hardy animals. Guests who visit Brookfield Zoo in January and February on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays receive free general admission (parking fees still applies).
