Elk Grove Shooting Scene During Early Investigation.

Elk Grove Village police and US Postal Inspector investigators are continuing their search for the gun that was used to shoot mail carrier Stephen Casazza Jr in the New Year’s Eve shooting on Brantwood Avenue in Elk Grove Village.

Investigators searched Ned Brown Forest Preserve “Busse Woods” among other locations in Elk Grove Village.

Police are looking for the 9 mm handgun they indicate was used in the shooting of 36-year-old postal worker Stephen Casazza Jr. of Arlington Heights in by Cameron Ruebusch in front of his own home at the southeast corner of Brantwood Avenue and Chelmsford Lane in Elk Grove Village.

Authorities say Cameron Ruebusch was armed with a handgun, when he tapped on the window of Casazza’s unmarked postal service van just before 6:00 p.m. Monday December 31, 2018 and asked, “What’s up, man?” Casazza put the van in drive and tried to get away, when he saw the gun, but Ruebusch fired at least three shots that critically injured the Casazza.

According to a criminal complaint, Ruebusch may have tried to dispose of the gun in Busse Woods located near his home. Investigators were working in the south end of Busse Woods Thursday, January 3, 2019.

A witness told investigators that Ruebusch called shortly after the shooting saying he was in trouble and needed to get rid of a gun, according to the criminal complaint. The witness is identified in court documents as Individual C. The witness statement indicates Ruebusch was picked upfrom a residence in Mount Prospect after the shooting. At Ruebusch’s request, Individual C took him to his mother’s apartment complex on Wellington Avenue in Elk Grove Village, the complaint states. Wellington Avenue is only a couple of blocks south of the crime scene. The closest border of the forest preserve is only about 1200 feet from the crime scene.

Witnesses at the shooting reported a seeing a dark SUV flee the area immediately after the shooting.

According to Individual C, Ruebusch retrieved the gun he had already buried in wood chips near the apartment complex on Wellington, put the gun in a plastic grocery bag, then ran toward Busse Woods.

The witness stated he believed Ruebusch was disposing of the handgun in the woods.

Ruebusch told the witness to meet him near Grove 32 in a southern section of the woods, but the car’s driver waited about 30 minutes for Ruebusch just northeast of the forest preserve
