Niles police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:25 PM Thursday December 27, 2018 to a report of a person hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Greenwood Avenue and Betty Terrace Niles, Il. Niles police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that an adult-age person was struck by a car near the intersection at Greenwood Avenue and Betty Terrace. The driver left the scene. Fire dispatchers helped the caller with CPR instructions.
UPDATE: Police say a driver of a white truck of SUV — that was rear-ended and hit pedestrian Michael Potwora, age 72 of Niles — fled the scene. The driver that hit the white vehicle got out to help Potwora.
Firefighter/paramedics on arrival reported a Good Samaritan was already performing CPR.
Police say an elderly person was struck while walking about 6:25 p.m., and that the crash is being investigated as a hit and run.
Initially, no information about the victim killed in the crash was available.
Also, police did not initially provide any information about a description of the driver or the vehicle wanted for investigation of a fatal hit-and-run.
Police reported that northbound Greenwood Avenue was closed from Normal to Roseview for the investigation and is expected to remain closed for several hours. Motorists were recommended to seek alternate routes.
The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF) Major Crash Assistance Team responded to the scene to assist Niles Police Department with the investigation.
UPDATE: Police urge anyone that knows witnessed the incident or has information about the case, or was traveling nearby on Greenwood Avenue about the time of the accident to contact the Niles Police Department at 847-588-6551.
Greenwood Avenue is a four-lane roadway with intermittent fifth lane for turns. The Speed Limit is marked 35 MPH as of Google Street View October 2012.
