Two Chicago Police Officers Struck and Killed by Metra South Shore Line Train During Shots Fired Investigation

Chicago police responded just before 6:20 p.m. Monday December 17, 2018 to investigate a ShotSpotter call at 101st Street and Dauphin Avenue. Two police officers were initially believed to be possibly involved in a foot pursuit while investigating a report of shots fired. During the investigation, the two Chicago police officers were hit by a South Shore Line train at 103rd Street near Cottage Grove on the city’s South Side Monday evening, according to officials. The South Shore Line train operates on Metra tracks.

Conrad Gary, age 31

DEVELOPING … A suspect is in custody and a weapon was recovered as a result of the continued shots fired investigation.

Metra confirmed that two people were hit by a NICTD-Indiana South Shore train at 103rd Street, which was on the way to Indiana about 7:30 p.m.

Train SS9119 is the train that was involved in the fatal incident. Metra police in addition to Chicago police were immediately on the scene with evidence technicians. The immediate scene stretched from 101st Place to 103rd Street. The train tracks are elevated in the area with a bridge over 103rd Street. Dauphin Avenue on the west runs north and south parallel to Cottage Grove Avenue on the east.

Police confirmed that two police officers were hit by the train, but initially stated there conditions were conditions are unknown.

The police officers are reported to be from the 5th District. CPD Police Commanders immediately replaced 5th District police officers on the scene so they would not be working at the scene of their fallen brothers.

Inbound and outbound trains on the Metra Electric District line have been stopped, according to Metra officials. The duration of the delay was not initially declared.

All trains, including CN freight trains and Amtrak trains were stopped outside of 95th Street to the north and outside 115th Street to the south.
