Tucker Carlson: When Political Debate Is Fueled by Sectarianism, There Is No Resolution

#ad▼

It’s easy to foresee what happens when the people in power claim moral authority they don’t have in order to compel you to obey: Resentment builds, factions form and craziness starts to seem normal.

Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson gives examples of political speeches, and says these speeches sound more like theology than political debate. The speeches are not based in reason, but based on something far less predictable and more ferocious — a religious argument. Carlson says that religious debates push people toward extremism. When reasonable arguments using logic morph into believing the opponent is inherently evil, there is tendency to want to harm the opponent.

Carlson say this shift in American politics isn’t actually politics, it’s sectarianism — and ultimately en incitement to violence. Arguments have become about character and motive, not about the reasonable mechanics of how to get things resolved.

“Political debates” no longer target what the person believes. Instead opponents refuse to hear the opposition’s explanation, and refuse to accept any apologies. The point today in a political argument is not to make things right or find a resolution; it’s to vanquish the enemy.
