Gurnee police, Illinois State Police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:53 PM Tuesday October 16, 2018 to a report of a rollover truck crash with injuries and hazmat 42.346165, -87.924253 (EB I-94 and Route 120 Gurnee, Il). Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a rollover crash at the base of the ramp from westbound Route 120 to the southbound lanes of EB I-94. The semi-trailer truck (trailer and cab) were at rest on the driver’s side in the right lane of I-94 right at the bottom of the ramp.
Injuries were initially reported to be minor.
Additional HazMat techs were dispatched at 5:50 p.m. An early report indicated the Hazmat Placard on the truck displayed “2375B” which is a high health hazard, low flammability and zero reactivity liquid chemical known as Aminoethylethanolaimine. Initially there was no official confirmation of the chemical involved. There was no initial report of any leak, and images on social media showed the crash with firefighters initially not using any SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus).
Immediate Effects Aminoethylethanolaimine Exposure
Irritation and burning of skin
Irritation and burning of eyes with possible permanent damage
Irritation of nasal lining, throat, and lungs causing coughing, wheezing and/or shortness of breath.
Any significant long-term effects may be skin allergy and asthma.
The crash was also reported on Waze. At 5:55 p.m. traffic on the southbound lanes of EB I-94 was at a standstill all the way past Washington Street, but before Grand Avenue near Great America. Traffic was completely blocked about 600 feet north of the Belvidere Road (Route 120) bridge. The standstill backup decreased to Milwaukee Avenue (IL-21) by 6:20 p.m.
