WNYW VIDEO: In New Jersey, superstorm Sandy destroyed several blocks of Atlantic City’s world-famous boardwalk and wrecked several other boardwalks up and down the coast. A Seaside Heights roller coaster was left partially submerged in the ocean.
Casino Pier and Funtown Pier are amusement parks in Seaside Heights that were mostly destroyed while each were located on a pier extending approximately 300 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. The destruction occurred as Hurricane Sandy/SuperStorm Sandy made landfall at or near Atlantic City, New Jersey. At Casino Pier, the Log Flume, The Star Jet, Stillwalk Manor, Centrifuge, and Music Express are reported to be destroyed.
As you might have heard or seen, our properties sustained a lot of damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Actual assessment of all the damage is still impossible. Our staff is reporting in and who we’ve heard from are ok. We will hopefully be able to get a better assessment in the upcoming days and will let you know how things are once we know. At about 8:30 a.m. Monday October 29, 2012 before the destruction, they shared a video of Casino Pier with the statement, “Contrary to the rumors, we are still standing!”
Seaside Heights is a popular resort community, with a beach, an amusement-oriented boardwalk, and numerous clubs and bars. Seaside Heights is a Borough in Ocean County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough population was 2,887 with a seasonal population of about 65,000 in the summer. During the summer, the borough attracts a crowd largely under the age of 21, drawn to boardwalk entertainment. Seaside Heights is one of the few Jersey Shore communities with a large number of apartments for the younger crowed — who are often out until early morning visiting bars and restaurants.
Seaside Heights is situated on the Barnegat Peninsula — a long, narrow barrier peninsula that separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean.

The reality television show Jersey Shore premiered in 2009 while following the lives of eight housemates, who were spending their summer at the Jersey Shore and Seaside Heights. The popular show with millions of viewers is currently in its final, sixth season; but has also received criticism from Italians, such as Nico National — a charitable service organization based in Connecticut — for falsely portraying Italians. Governor Chris Christie has called the show “negative for New Jersey.” In September 2011 Governor Christie vetoed a $420,000 tax incentive awarded the reality show by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. Christie basically said he didn’t want taxpayers footing the bill for a project that perpetuates misconceptions about the state and its citizens.
Most prominent now is the reaction from New Jersey residents. They’re heartbroken about the widespread destruction to homes and the pier — the source of many fond memories.
