Aerial Firefighting As Fire Threatens 100 Homes Near Santa Barbara, California

A wildfire in the rugged hills overlooking Santa Barbara threatened about 100 homes Wednesday in an area where a fire in 1990 killed one person and burned about 550 homes.

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s deputies went door to door evacuating people from the Painted Cave area, an isolated mix of cabins and homes near a rocky ridge.

Four helicopters and two air tankers were providing aerial support for firefighters on the ground. Firefighters on the ground were using 16 fire engines. Several hand crews were using beaters and shovels and other equipment.
