Kavanaugh Nomination, with 51-49 Vote, Moves Forward to Saturday Final Floor Vote

A deeply divided Senate pushed Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination past a key procedural hurdle Friday, setting up a likely final showdown this weekend in a battle that’s seen claims of long-ago sexual assault by the nominee threaten President Donald Trump’s effort to tip the court rightward for decades.

The Senate, today October 5, 2018, voted 51-49 to limit debate, which barely defeated Democratic efforts to talk for hours in order to delay the nomination. With Republicans clinging to a two-vote majority, one Republican — Senator Lisa Ann Murkowski (R-Alaska) voted to stop the nomination, and one Democrat — Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) voted to go forward with the nomination.

Four lawmakers had not revealed their decisions until today …

Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine voted YES,

Republican Jeff Flake of Arizona voted YES,

Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia voted YES, and

Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted No …

to sending the nomination to the full Senate.

Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Lisa Ann Murkowski (R-Alaska) had said they would not vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh unless the FBI conducts an investigation of sexual assault allegations made by Christine Blasey Ford and others. The FBI provided a 50-page report yesterday. Murkowski was the only Republican to vote against the nomination.

Joe Manchin faced chants of “Shame, Shame Shame” in the halls of the Senate as he announced his intention to vote for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh‘s confirmation.

Susan Collins is known as a very liberal Republican in Maine. Some pundits on Fox News Thursday expressed that they were worried about her safety in Maine.

Sarah Palin tweeted, “Hey Lisa Murkowski – I can see 2022 from my house…”

Lawmakers could still vote differently on the final confirmation roll call on Saturday, October 6, 2018. Collins told reporters that she wouldn’t rule out voting no on Saturday.
