Chicago Police Prep For Van Dyke Verdict with Battle Dress Uniforms, 12-Hour Shifts

Chicago police are preparing for demonstrations by using tactics similar to those used in the NATO protests in May 2012 (CBS Chicago Mike Puccinelli reports).

Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Thursday October 4, 2018 in the trial of Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke, charged with the murder of Laquan McDonald on October 20, 2014. The defense rested its case Wednesday.

Van Dyke, age 40, took the stand Tuesday to say he only shot McDonald after the teen refused to drop his knife and continued to advance at the officer. Van Dyke’s testimony contradicts accounts from eyewitnesses, who testified McDonald was walking away from police when Van Dyke opened fire.

“The Chicago Police Department has a comprehensive operating plan to ensure public safety in all of our neighborhoods while simultaneously protecting the rights of peaceful demonstrations”

— Chicago Police Department

Van Dyke is charged with first-degree murder, official misconduct and aggravated battery for shooting 17-year-old McDonald 16 times on Monday October 20, 2014, near 41st Street and Pulaski Road.

Ahead of the verdict Catholic priest Father Michael Pfleger has called for a complete shutdown of Chicago to “send an Economic message of Outrage” if there is anything less than a conviction. Pfleger is asking that “no one should go to work, school, any stores.”

Police are set to be equipped with a large communication network, involving varying types of tactical units to keep peace on the streets. Police will be wearing Battle Dress Uniforms (BDUs) and will be working 12-hour shifts.

The Chicago police will also be keeping extra watch over several events that are taking place in Chicago in the next few days.

Ed Sheeran performs at Soldier Field Thursday,

Fleetwood Mac performs at the United Center Saturday,

the Bank of America International 5K steps off Saturday morning,

the Chicago Blackhawks host their home opener Sunday,

and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon takes place Sunday.

The Chicago Bears have a bye week this weekend, play in Miami on October 14th, and return home to face the Patriots on October 21.
