A section of a parking garage under construction collapsed at Miami Dade College, killing two people and trapping two others in the rubble, officials said. One worker was rescued amid the debris.

Miami-Dade firefighter/paramedics and Technical Rescue Team rescuers responded about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to 3800 NW 115th Avenue in Doral, Florida. Two people were reported killed, one person missing, one person still trapped and possibly 10 injured, at about 9:15 p.m. local time.

One victim’s legs were pinned under a large piece of precast concrete. Rescuers, who had a surgical kit on standby, had to prepare him for the possibility that both his legs would need to be extricated in order to save his life.

Another victim was trapped in the cab of a vehicle.

One victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center for treatment. The other victims were transported to Kendall Regional Medical Center.

The $22.5 million parking garage was scheduled to open in December 2012, and was designed to have a capacity of at least 1,500 vehicles. The victims were apparently all construction workers, who had only seconds to try to run and save themselves. No students were in the garage.
