U.S. airlines collected more than $1.7 billion in baggage fees during the first half of the year, the largest amount ever collected in that six-month period.

Airlines started collecting baggage fees in 2008.

Delta collected the most fees — $430 million in baggage fees in the first six months of the year.

United Airlines collected $351 million.

Associated Press Airlines Writer Scott Mayerowitz reports that with razor thin margins, fees are the only way the airlines make a profit.
