Teachers Union Delegates Vote to End Strike, Teachers Still Need to Vote on Contract

CTU President Karen Lewis explains the final meeting and voting process at a press conference Tuesday.

Chicago’s teachers agreed Tuesday to return to the classroom after more than a week on the picket lines, ending a spiteful stalemate with Mayor Rahm Emanuel that put teacher evaluations and job security at the center of a national debate. The union’s 700-plus delegates voted to reopen the schools (98 percent to 2 percent). About 25,000 teachers still have to vote on the contract, which all teachers have not seen because it is not complete.

“Do we stay on strike forever until every little thing we want can be gotten?”

— Karen Lewis, Chicago Teachers Union President

As they awaited a vote that could end Chicago’s first teachers strike in 25 years, teachers were balancing their desire to get back to class with lingering doubts and questions about a proposed contract.
