A 5-Alarm fire killed one person in a condominium building fire that started just before 7:42 a.m. Sunday morning September 16, 2018. The fire spread across the top floor of a six-story condominium building at 9396 Landing Lanes near the intersection of Potter Road and Ballard Road in unincorporated Des Plaines.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office reported the victim died from burns, but did not initially provide an identity about the victim or confirm other details about the victim.

One person was seen transported from the scene with a bandage on his arm. He was walking and did not appear to have life-threatening injuries in a fire that spread unusually fast. Residents reported the fire spread very quickly — first an alarm, then smoke, and then intense flames.

North Maine Battalion Chief 1 on arrival at 7:45 a.m. reported fire coming from the top floor. The fire was immediately elevated to a working fire response. The fire was elevated by 8:03 a.m. to a MABAS Division 3 Box Alarm on Box #1F-121 for a fire in a 6-story condo/apartment building.

Next, the fire was elevated to a 2nd Alarm by 8:31 a.m. a 3rd Alarm by 8:34 a.m., a 4th Alarm at 9:48 a.m. and a 5th Alarm at 10:05 a.m. bringing firefighters from as far away as Lincolnshire, Schaumburg, and Norwood Park. About the time of the 5th Alarm, there was a report of a partial roof collapse on the east side of the building. A 5th Alarm + Special was activated when the fire flare up occurred at about 1:40 p.m. and fresh crews from Des Plaines and Mount Prospect were dispatched to the scene.

In addition to the one person killed, there was at least one firefighter injured, and possibly four other people injured that were transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview with injuries that were initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

North Maine Fire Protection District Chief Robert McKay said there were other injuries to both residents and firefighters, but did not release specific information about the injuries or how many people were injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. North Maine Fire Protection District covers areas of unincorporated Des Plaines. Firefighters from the City of Des Plaines, Glenview, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Northbrook, Norwood Park, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Rosemont, Schaumburg, Schiller Park, and Wheeling assisted North Maine firefighter/paramedics.

One woman was rescued off a balcony because she wasn’t able to descend the stairs.

Many residents of the Landings condominium complex’s Building J at 9396 Landings Lane, were able to flee their units before firefighters arrive, helping family members and pets escape.

The Red Cross set up a command post at the complex clubhouse for The Landings Condominiums for support of residents who will require temporary housing.
