Way, Hay Tow Them Away No More? State’s Illinois Commerce Commission Revokes Lincoln Towing’s License

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has revoked the license of one of Chicago’s infamous towing companies, Lincoln Towing (Vince Gerasole reports).

Lincoln Towing at 4882 North Clark Street has been closed by the Illinois Commerce Commission.

A recent investigation by the Illinois Commerce Commission goes back to February 24, 2016, but a notorious Lincoln Towing reputation goes back at least to 1972 when singer/songwriter Steve Goodman released a song about the towing operation, known as The Lincoln Park Pirates. Complaints actually go back to the late 1960s — documented by the Chicago Tribune in 1968 and Mike Royko in the Chicago Daily News in 1967.

At the heart of the notoriety was towing of legally parked cars, and intimidation of vehicle owners who were trying to get their vehicles back in their possession without paying.

Lincoln Towing “… has not conducted its business with honesty and integrity …”

— Illinois Commerce Commission

Recent video evidence captured a woman jumping on the back of her legally parked car as Lincoln Towing took her vehicle away. Another video caught a Lincoln Towing driver using a Slim Jim to enter a taxi.

Be it Edsel or Chevy there’s no car too heavy, and no one can make use shut down.

We break into cars when we gotta — with pick axe, and hammer and saw; and they said this garage had no license, but little care I for the law.

— Lyrics The Lincoln Park Pirates

Attorneys for Lincoln Towing can seek a restraining order related to the current ruling, and the towing service is still collecting payments to release vehicles to owners with cashiers on duty.
