U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan from Wisconsin Chosen As Mitt Romney’s Running Mate for Vice President

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate, turning to the architect of a deeply conservative and intensely controversial long-term budget plan.

Paul Davis Ryan is the U.S. Representative for Wisconsin’s 1st congressional district, serving Kenosha County, Racine County and most of Walworth County. Republican Paul Ryan has served since 1999. Ryan was confirmed as the vice presidential running mate by presidential candidate Mitt Romney Saturday morning in front of the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, Virginia.

Paul Ryan is known as a scholar of the budget, but his proposals have struggled for final approval. Ryan is often cited for his views on economic policy and especially his proposed changes to Medicare. On May 21, 2008, Ryan introduced H.R. 6110, titled “Roadmap for America’s Future Act of 2008” — proposed legislation that outlined changes to entitlement spending, notably major alterations in Medicare. The bill found only eight sponsors and did not move past committee.

On April 15, 2011, the House passed the Ryan Plan for 2012 by a vote of 235-193. Four Republicans joined all House Democrats in voting against the Ryan Plan. One month later, the bill died in the Senate by a vote of 57-40, with five Republicans and most Democrats in opposition. Pundits and critics of the Ryan Plan argued that the programs that would be cut from the budget were not specified, and that Medicare ‘as we know it’ would be dismantled. Proponents reported that the Ryan Plan would reduce the deficit more than President Barack Obama’s budget plans, and would shift the United States toward a consumption tax.

Ryan graduated from Miami University of Ohio.

Representative Paul Ryan married Janna Little, a tax attorney in December 2000. The Ryan family lives in Janesville with their three children Elizabeth Anne, Charles Wilson, and Samuel Lowery. Ryan is Roman Catholic and is a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
