Ask Paul B: Salute to America on the Fourth of July

#ad▼

Dear Paul B,

Growing up in Arlington Heights has been a very patriotic experience for me. As I stood and watched fireworks last night, and watched children ooh and ah, I realized how darn lucky I am to be here in America. I thought about the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the Big Wars of the 20th Century, and I was actually brought to tears. I am just a shade past 50 and I just wanted to share my thoughts and feelings about our U.S. of America. Our country, so young, as compared to others, has such a tradition of honor, bravery and commitment to individuals rights and personal freedoms, I am just overwhelmed with gratitude and pride. I know that I should think more about my “fortune,” but I wanted to share this with others, who many not ever consider all that we enjoy as Americans. We have many challenges ahead, but I know that we’ll pull through with flying colors. Thanks for taking time in reading this. It would be great to see this one published, but I am glad that I wrote about my patriotism anyway.

++++++++++++++++

Dear Jackie,

I loved your letter. I too am north of 50, and I will tell you how proud I AM of our U.S. of A. Whenever I am in the company of a veteran of foreign wars, I will approach this man and just tell him “thanks for your courage.” They are often taken by surprise, but always honored to be “thanked” for their bravery. These men and women risked their lives for OUR country. Yes, they were called, and they responded in kind. We cannot take this for granted, nor should we ever forget the sacrifices that these courageous individuals made in the name of peace for their fellow Americans. My Dad was in the first assault at Normandy, and he was injured as well. He died before he would share with me his experiences during his 14 months “over there.” I regret that I know nothing about his thoughts or actions during D-Day or otherwise. My heart swells with pride when I read letters like yours, Jackie. Thanks a bunch. Peace.
