A partner at a prominent Chicago law firm was shot and killed Monday evening in north suburban Northfield, and a suspect was taken into custody after a standoff in neighboring Winnetka. CBS 2’s Lauren Victory reports.

Police arrested a man in Winnetka near Tower Road and Green Bay road about three hours after he was suspected of fatally shooting a prominent Chicago attorney during a domestic dispute at a home on Latrobe Avenue in Northfield, according to Northfield police.

The shooting victim was identified as 71-year-old Stephen Shapiro by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Stephen Shapiro was found fatally shot inside a home in the block of 200 Latrobe Avenue in Northfield. Police and firefighters responded about 7:19 p.m. Monday, August 13, 2018 to a 2-story brick house on Latrobe north of Sunset Road.

Shapiro was a partner at the Mayer Brown law firm in Chicago. He was founder and senior member of the firm’s Supreme Court and appellate practice.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Steve Shapiro, our friend and colleague,” the firm said in a statement. “Steve joined our firm in 1972 and was promoted to partner in 1978, becoming one of the most accomplished appellate lawyers in the United States. Our thoughts are with Steve’s family at this difficult time.”

Stephen Shapiro leaves behind a wife and daughter. Shapiro also had a son who recently passed away.

Police were hot on the suspect’s trail and a notification was broadcast to police in several communities in the area. Police caught up with the male murder suspect, who barricaded himself inside a building near Tower and Green Bay Rd. Police said the suspect initially fled into some nearby woods and then returned to his apartment in Winnetka at Tower Road and Green Bay Road. Initially police did not release information about how they discovered the suspect’s identity or whether anyone witnessed the shooting. Also, a motive was not initially released.

The standoff lasted about three hours as police and SWAT teams attempted to communicate and negotiate with the suspect. A Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Service Team surrounded the building with at least one armored Bearcat truck and command and operations vehicles were on the scene.

About 11:00 p.m., a middle-aged male suspect wearing glasses, black shorts and black shirt was led out of the building in handcuffs by SWAT team members from the NIPAS Emergency Services Team.

Northfield police expect criminal charges will be filed against the male suspect. His identity was not initially released.

North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF) is assisting Northfield Police Department with the investigation.
