Video of Henryville, Indiana Tornado Shows Danger of Working Camera During a Tornado

#ad▼

WARNING GRAPHIC LANGUAGE: Video of the EF-4 tornado that blasted through Henryville, Indiana on March 2, 2012. Videographer aimed the camera out the back door of his house — approximately one-quarter mile away from the passing tornado.

The video illustrates well the dangers present while standing outside and capturing a tornado on video.

1. Debris is flying throughout the length of the video.

2. At 0:24 elapsed time the video shows that the cameraman is standing too close under a power line drop from the pole to the house. If winds moved the pole, or a tree or branch fell on the power line, the live wire could detach from the house and strike the cameraman as it whips in the wind. Always stay away from power lines, even if they are connected overhead, after storms or crashes.

3. Rear-flank downdraft winds and other winds sucking toward the tornado can still cause significant damage while the tornado is departing.
