Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:10 p.m. Friday to a report of a chimney fire in an apartment building in the 1600 block of Woods Drive. Firefighters upon arrival reported smoke and some fire showing from a chimney. Firefighters while attempting to access an attic to look for extension from the chimney reported deteriorating interior conditions about 11:50 p.m. The conditions required the firefighters to back out of their position and stop their interior attack of the fire. About the same time, firefighters at the front of the building reported that flames were showing through the roof near the chimney. About a 250 square-foot section of the roof ignited near the chimney and collapsed into the attic just as firefighters retreated from the area.

Firefighters hit the fire from a ladder tower platform just above the chimney to improve conditions enough to allow another try for an interior attack. Firefighters shut down the water from the aerial tower so firefighters on the third floor and attic could go back to work with an interior attack. The fire in the attic progressed toward the north side of the building, but firefighters put a good stop to extension of the fire.

About 11:50 p.m. fire command call for a Box Alarm, which brought in additional firefighters from nearby communities to assist Arlington Heights firefighters. Firefighters pulled down ceilings to expose the fire and hit the fire with water with an interior attack.

All hots spots were declared out on the third floor with firefighters working on overhaul about 12:41 a.m. Saturday. The Box Alarm was struck out about 1:05 a.m. Saturday.

No injuries were reported.
