A new Wig Boutique for cancer survivors at Northwest Community Hospital was the recipient Monday of a generous donation from a local high school hockey team.

Players from PREP hockey – which is a combined team representing Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Elk Grove and Prospect high schools – visited the boutique and presented a $1,000 check to the hospital. The donation, made possible by the team’s October fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will enable the boutique to offer a larger variety of attractive wigs for cancer patients.

“The generosity of these young men has really touched the hearts of our patients and staff,” said Kim Jensen, oncology social worker at NCH. “Losing your hair can impact your self-image and self-esteem. Beautiful wigs can be a confidence builder and help restore a sense of normalcy to life.”

The American Cancer Society supplies the new wigs at the NCH boutique, which opened Oct. 1 on the fifth floor of the hospital’s Busse Center for Specialty Medicine on the Arlington Heights campus. Belvedere USA LLS, makers of salon furniture, donated the station, mirror, chair and cabinet that houses the wigs.

Hats, shampoos and other items that assist cancer survivors are being added to the boutique as funding allows. All of the products are free to NCH patients.

To make an appointment for a wig, contact the American Cancer Society at 800.227.2345 and request the Northwest Community Hospital location.
