Ask Paul B: Holiday Crowds Got You Down? Humane vs. Selfish.

#ad▼

Dear Paul B,

I am shocked that people walked over some poor man who was suffering from a heart-attack. It happened in West Virginia., and he was only 61. How does one explain that? Is it me or have we become so selfish that we just don’t care about human beings any longer?

Shocked and Sad

++++++++++++++++

Dear S & S,

Where have you been? This has been happening since the first “blue light special” began to spin that way-cool disco light at K-Mart years ago. Shoppers (a.k.a. crazed-nutbags) have placed that might dollar way, way ahead of the value of human life forever and a day. I have even heard about people being trampled to be the first to grab that teal sweater from the 50%-off bin. After all, what’s more important? It doesn’t only happen when prices are slashed to near ridiculous cost levels, but at concert events as well. There was a WHO concert at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnatti on December 3, 1979, which in and of itself can heighten ones emotions to the highest level. It was some uber managers decision to allow “first come first serve” seating as the ONLY DOOR opened for the concert that winter night. Are you getting the picture? The thought of thousands of WHO fans rushing through ONE skinny little entrance into the facility still sends shivers down my neck. Naturally there was carnage at the door as eleven fans lost their lives. Have we learned nothing from this? Soccer fans continue to die in bunches as they rush the field when their team loses or an official rules against their team. Tough to figure out the psyche of people as they value just about anything higher than a persons life. Be careful out there, ya’ll, it’s literally a jungle out there!
