Tornado Damages Churchill Downs Near Louisville, Horses Running Loose

Churchill Downs says racing will resume at the home of the Kentucky Derby after a tornado smashed several horse barns and postponed events for a day.

The National Weather Service reports that radar was tracking a confirmed tornado near the Churchill Downs horse racetrack and the University of Louisville campus about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday. Damage has been reported Wednesday night. Races don’t run on Wednesday, but there were likely people at Churchill Downs for simulcasting of races from other locations.

At least five barns were damaged. The chapel was also reported damaged.

The famous spires of Churchill Downs were apparently not damaged. Most damage was near the backside of the track where horse barns and workers live in dorms.

The tornado passed near University of Louisville campus, but little damage has been reported from that location at first inspection.

Arlington Park Racetrack is owned by Churchill Downs.
