St. Charles Fire Department responded about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a fire at Salerno’s on the Fox at 320 North 2nd Street. Firefighters arrived to find a fire fueld by a gas line leak at the restaurant.

Nicor arrived at the scene about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, but because of unsafe conditions, could they not shutoff the gas at the meter at the building. Nicor workers excavated the parking lot to shut off a valve underground. At about 9:00 p.m. gas was shut off and the fire was struck.

No injuries were reported. The restaurant was open at the time of the fire, and all employees and customers were evacuated safely.

A box alarm was requested by St. Charles Fire Department. Fire departments from Batavia, Elburn & Countryside FPD, Elgin, Geneva, South Elgin, West Chicago and others assisted St. Charles Fire Department.

A rough year for restaurant lovers in the area, as the Mill Race Inn about 2 miles down the Fox River closed in February, 2011. No word on when Salerno’s on the Fox will re-open. Damage is estimated at almost $500,00 including contents and the building structure.
