A bat killed by two house cats on May 20, 2011 tested positive for rabies. A second bat found outside a Waukegan dog kennel on May 23, 2011 also tested positive for rabies.
A bat found under a deck of house on Pinecrest Road in Bolingbrook on May 21, 2011 has tested positive for rabies on May 24, 2011. Seven people and three dogs live at the address, and the dogs are current on their rabies vaccinations.
Memorial Day traditionally marks the beginning of the prime rabies season in the state. Bats are usually most active in July, August and September. Bats are normally active at night. If a bat is found out and about during the day, it could be sick.
Rabies is a fatal disease that is preventable if treated immediately after bites from infected animals. Bats found indoors should be caught and tested because they may have infected residents of the home by bites that occurred while the residents were asleep.
