UPDATE: Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart has announced Wednesday that a person of interest is now in custody as a result of the investigation into the strangulation death of
18-year-old Rosemary Newman of Alsip.

Though the investigation remains ongoing, Sheriff’s Police investigators do not
believe Newman’s death was a random act of violence.

On Sunday morning, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office began conducting an investigation into the death of Rosemary Newman, 18, of Alsip after her body was found by a man who was walking his dog in a Cook County Forest Preserve near Calumet City sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. that day.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of Newman’s death
was strangulation. Newman was nine months pregnant and the baby also died during the crime.

Rosemary Newman was last seen at a south suburban restaurant with a friend Saturday night.
Her family reported her missing after she failed to return home.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of other members of the
South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, is now aggressively pursuing several
leads in this case, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

The case remains an open and active investigation. As a result, no further
information is expected to be released at this time.
